Team Troon On Tour: Congrats To Gary Woodland! The 2019 U.S. Open Champ
Wow! What a tournament for Gary Woodland! On Father’s Day, Gary (a dad himself) brought home a “Major Team Troon victory” capturing his first ever major in the 119th U.S. Open title.
Some interesting facts:
- Hit Greens & You Can Win A US Open: He led the U.S. Open field in greens hit in regulation
- Four Rounds, Only Four Bogey’s: Gary matched the U.S. Open record for fewest bogeys or worse (4).
- Record Setting Tournament Score: His 68-65-69-69, 271 four round total of -13 was the lowest 72-hole score in six U.S. Opens at Pebble Beach (one shot lower then Tiger’s 2000 performance).
- Long and Short of It: Two clutch shots coming in was his 263 yard 3 wood on the par 4 14th and the “chip” from the front part of green on 17 to make par.
- First W in 2019: Woodland had previously won 3 times on tour, with his last victory coming at the 2018 WM Phoenix Open. This win qualifies him for a return visit to Kapalua for the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions (where he came in second in 2019).
- Rock Chalk: Originally from Topeka, Kansas, Gary Woodland played collegiate golf at KU.
- Amy Was Pulling For Gary: Gary Woodland (and Matt Kuchar) played the 16th at WMPhoenix Open with Special Olympics golfer (and Paradise Valley Community College golfer) Amy Bockerstette, who has Down syndrome (in Feb this year). Amy made an amazing Par on 16 saying “I’ve Got This” (The video has millions of views). On Sunday Morning Amy tweeted Gary with a simple: “You’ve got this @GaryWoodland.”
Gary surprised Amy with a call right after winning the US Open too!
Over all Team Troon was well represented at the U.S. Open as four of six Team Troon players that finished in the Top 25.
