Relentlessly Dedicated With Steven Outlaw
Q: Tell us about your international opportunities within Troon?
A: I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work abroad in the Middle East at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, and in Southeast Asia with The Els Club Teluk Datai in Langkawi, Malaysia. In both assignments, I was heavily ingratiated in our golf operations and even had the opportunity to assume the interim position, Director of Club Operations at The Els Club Teluk Datai.
Q: What is one takeaway from traveling, living and working abroad that you would like to share?
A: Embrace the unfamiliar with an open mind. Working in diverse cultural settings like the Middle East and Southeast Asia taught me the importance of adaptability and understanding. It’s not just about adjusting your work style; it’s about deeply respecting and learning from the rich cultures and traditions you’re immersed in, which in turn, enriches both personal growth and professional practice.
Q: What advice would you give to those thinking about doing an international rotation at Troon or within the hospitality industry?
A: Go for it with enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn. International rotations offer unparalleled opportunities to broaden your professional expertise and personal worldview. Be proactive in seeking out challenges and be prepared to step outside your comfort zone. The skills and insights gained from such experiences are invaluable and can set you apart in your career.
Q: What is one food or experience that you would consider a must eat or must do in both Dubai and Malaysia?
A: In Dubai, experiencing a traditional desert safari followed by a Bedouin-style dinner under the stars is unforgettable. In Malaysia, you must try the local street food, particularly in Langkawi. The diversity and richness of flavors reflect the country’s multicultural heritage. Don’t miss out on Nasi Lemak, a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk, considered the national dish.
Q: What is something that not many people know about you that you don’t mind sharing?
A: A lesser-known fact about me is my enduring desire to constantly seek out new experiences and challenges beyond my comfort zone. I’ve always been driven by a curiosity to explore the unknown and a willingness to try anything at least once. This mindset has not only shaped my personal adventures but also deeply influenced my professional journey, pushing me to embrace international opportunities and the diverse challenges they bring
