TROON STARTS YEAR ON A HIGH WITH THREE WORLD-CLASS PROFESSIONAL EVENTS
Dubai, UAE – March 2, 2020: Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management, has made the perfect start to the new year with three world-renowned events on both the PGA and European Tours taking place at managed properties.
The 2020 PGA Tour season kicked off with the PGA Tour’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, held from 2nd – 5th January, which took place at Kapalua Golf’s newly refined Plantation Course. Not only was the world of golf able to see the magnificence of the course enhancements, completed under the watchful eye of architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Troon and Kapalua’s agronomy teams and Golf Channel personality Mark Rolfing, but Team Troon ambassador Justin Thomas also won the event in dramatic fashion on the third playoff hole for good measure.
Mike Ryan, Chief Operating Officer, Troon, said: “The newly refined Plantation Course looked and played amazing. Thank you to Bill Coore, Ben Crenshaw, Mark Rolfing, the Troon Agronomy Team and Kapalua Golf’s Director of Agronomy Andrew Rebman and his team for their incredible efforts to have the course ready and in pristine condition for the PGA Tour’s best.”
Following the excitement in Hawaii, the world’s top players headed to the Middle East, where Troon’s International Division was in the limelight, and the European Tour returned to Abu Dhabi Golf Club, for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA – the opening Rolex Series event of 2020. The course continually boasts some of the most pristine fairways and greens on the Tour and Troon plays a critical managerial role on its conditioning to ensure the most efficient maintenance.
Abu Dhabi’s agronomy team had been working to ensure the course was at the peak of its powers from 16th – 19th January, with almost 100 members of staff involved in course maintenance.
Lee Westwood lifted the Falcon trophy, which was the Englishman’s 44th professional win – and added testament to the agronomy efforts following his round, commenting that at the Abu Dhabi course “the greens were immaculate.”
Robin Evans, Vice President of Construction & Agronomy – Troon International, said: “I’m incredibly proud of the team at Abu Dhabi Golf Club – our constant commitment to achieving agronomic excellence by utilising reliable, proven techniques enables us to create immaculate playing surfaces that rival the best in the world.”
Moving due west, the European Tour finished off its Desert Swing with the return of the Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers from 30th January – 2nd February. Last year, the Kingdom became the latest to stage its first top tier event on the European Tour, with the world’s top players in attendance at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club. Dustin Johnson was in attendance to defend his Saudi title alongside other top players; however, Graeme McDowell lifted the trophy in a thrilling last round to win by two strokes ahead of Johnson. With one of the strongest fields the European Tour has ever seen, this was testament to McDowell’s focus and stamina playing such a well presented course.
On its fast start to the year, President of Troon International, Mark Chapleski, commented: “Our agronomy team’s collective expertise is apparent for all to see at each of these high-profile tournaments hosted at Troon venues this year. These significant tour events allow us to showcase the conditioning Troon venues receive and prove that even the very best players in the world appreciate our attention to detail and high standards.”
