TROON GOLF TO MANAGE KIERLAND GOLF CLUB
Troon Golf, the world’s leading luxury brand golf development, marketing, and management company has been contracted to manage Kierland Golf Club, the active, 27-hole centerpiece of the massive multi-use commercial and residential project under development in north central Scottsdale.
“With its corporate headquarters based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Troon Golf has always viewed Kierland as a good neighbor,” said Troon Golf President and Chief Operating Officer, John Sauter. “Now we are privileged to add this remarkable golf facility to our family of golf properties.”
The Kierland project is being developed by Woodbine Southwest Corporation, the Phoenix-based subsidiary of Woodbine Development Corporation headquartered in Dallas, Texas. “We are very familiar with Troon Golf through our relationship at The Westin La Cantera Resort in San Antonio, Texas,” said Gregory Mowatt, Woodbine Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. “We are certain that Troon Golf will provide the same renowned agronomic standards, meticulous maintenance practices, and impeccable levels of customer service at Kierland.” When complete, The Westin Kierland Resort will be the prominent feature of this development, which combines commercial, retail and office space with residential and recreational projects.
Designed by golf course architect Scott Miller, Kierland Golf Club is set in a lush, rolling, urban parkland near the intersection of Scottsdale Road and Greenway. All three of its nine-hole offerings are named after various trees that dominate the landscape — Acacia, Ironwood, and Mesquite. The ample use of native grasses in the non-play areas, most prominent on the Ironwood nine, helps to define the fairways and is representative of a links course design.
The course layout features exciting shifts in elevation, particularly on the Acacia nine where the ninth hole drops nearly 80 feet from tee to green. Threading through several dry washes, the tree-lined Mesquite nine more closely resembles a desert-style track. The 20,000 square-foot clubhouse currently under construction will be the finishing touch to Kierland Golf Club.
“We believe Troon Golf’s involvement in this development will contribute significantly to the recreational and entertainment venue for the business and residential communities of Kierland as well as the guests of the resort,” said Troon Golf Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dana Garmany. “We are pleased to work with our Westin partners in our home town.”
