LONGBOW GOLF CLUB SET TO HOST U.S. DISABLED OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona will host the U.S. Disabled Open Golf Championship presented by PING, May 17 – 20, 2021. The Championship will feature United States Disabled Golf Association (USDGA) players with various impairments such as amputees, wounded veterans, blind and partially sighted, Special Olympians, stroke survivors, cerebral palsy, and many others. The U.S. Disabled Open Golf Championship at Longbow Golf Club will be a 54-hole competition taking place May 18 – 20, with a pre-tournament practice round taking place on May 17, 2021. The Championship is free for spectators and open to the public.

Golfers set to compete in the 2021 Championship include, Amy Bockerstette of Phoenix. Bockerstette made history this week, becoming the first person with Down syndrome to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla., representing Paradise Valley Community College. In addition, Defending Men’s Champion Chris Biggins; Defending Women’s Champion Grace Braxton; 2019 Seated Champion Mariano Tubio; 2018 Men’s Champion Ryan Brendan; and 2019 Men’s Division runner-up Chad Pfeifer, are all set to compete.

The USDGA highlights the skills of the world’s best disabled golfers and presents tournaments where disabled golfers can compete on a worldwide stage. USDGA Founder Jason Faircloth made it his passion and mission to develop the U.S. event after having an incredible experience while playing in the Disabled British Open in 2011 and 2012.

The 2020 U.S. Disabled Open Golf Championship was to be held at Longbow in May of 2020, but was rescheduled due to COVID-19 restrictions. The 2021 Championship will be the USDGA’s third annual championship. The organization hosted its inaugural tournament at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. in 2018, while the 2019 tournament was played at Independence Golf Club in Richmond, Va. Chris Biggins from Birmingham, Ala. and Grace Braxton from Fredericksburg, Va. are the defending champions in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. The 2019 championship featured 74 golfers from around the U.S. and eight foreign countries.
