GOLFWEEK IDENTIFIES THE 2010 “BEST NEW COURSES”
Scottsdale, Ariz. – Troon Golf,® the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing is pleased to recognize three of its managed properties named among the “Best New Courses” by Golfweek magazine. The list took into account the best 40 courses that opened in the past two calendar years (2009-2010).
Representing Troon Golf at No. 7 on the coveted list is Red Ledges Golf Club in Heber City, Utah, designed by Jack Nicklaus. Red Ledges is a private golf and four-season recreational community minutes away from Park City. The facility features 18 holes melded into an alpine landscape with spectacular views of the Rocky Mountain range. With the unique topography of the area, Nicklaus was able to design each hole around natural surroundings that range from lofty hills and Juniper tree groves to tee boxes perched on red rock sandstone ledges.
Conestoga Golf Club, located in Mesquite, Nev. was rated No. 28 for its Gary Panks-designed course. The 18-hole scenic masterpiece is artfully interwoven with the character and contours of the area’s spectacular landforms. The course fits seamlessly into its environment as it undulates through canyons and meanders around rugged rock outcroppings and tranquil water elements. With more than 51 strategically placed bunkers, Conestoga offers an experience that is both challenging and unforgettable.
Sequoyah National, rated No. 39 by Golfweek, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in Cherokee, N.C. Owned by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, Sequoyah National offers golfers an idyllic 18-hole journey, filled with scenic vistas, beautiful landscapes and challenging golf. The championship course features immaculately groomed bent grass greens with bluegrass fairways and spectacular views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The panel of Golfweek course raters used their standard methodology to identify this year’s list of the “Best New Courses.” The criteria used includes: Ease and intimacy of routing – The extent to which the sequence of holes follows natural contours and unfolds in an unforced manner. Variety and memorability of par 3s, 4s and 5s – Different clubs hit; extent to which the angles of play create interesting and varied playing options; and extent to which holes offer variety of options from the tee and on the second shot. Basic quality of conditioning – Variety of playing textures; extent of turf coverage; consistency and quality of bunker sand. “Walk in the park” test – Degree to which the course ultimately is worth spending a half-day on.
