GOLF DIGEST PICKS THE “75 BEST GOLF RESORTS IN NORTH AMERICA”
Scottsdale, Ariz. – Troon Golf,® the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing is thrilled to recognize the following facilities that have been named to Golf Digest’s biennial list of the “75 Best Golf Resorts in North America,” featured in the magazine’s December 2006 issue.
Coming in at No. 23 is the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. Located in the high Sonoran desert in Scottsdale, Arizona, Troon North Golf Club stands as the hallmark of the desert golf experience, stretching through the natural ravines and foothills in the shadow of Pinnacle Peak. Both Tom Weiskopf’s Monument and Weiskopf/Morrish’s Pinnacle are classic desert designs accessible for resort guests. New at the Four Seasons this year is the resort’s gallery showcasing art of the American West.
The Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona was named No. 37 on this year’s list. The resort’s award winning 27-holes of golf provide a prefect blend of challenging sport and uncommon beauty. Three memorable nines, each named for it surrounding landscape – Canyon, Desert and Oasis, comprise this championship facility.
Moving up 15 spots on the list to No. 48 is The Westin La Cantera Resort in San Antonio Texas. An idyllic country retreat for both business golfers and leisure guests, the Resort Course, a Weiskopf/Morrish design, plays host to the Valero Texas Open; and the Palmer Course, a signature design by Arnold Palmer Design Company, offers a great challenge to new and experienced golfers alike.
No. 63 on the list is Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa, on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. Thirty-six holes of signature golf are the resorts centerpiece, with the Melrose Course, a Nicklaus Signature Course, featuring a links-style layout where the last three holes play along the Atlantic shoreline. The Bloody Point course, a Weiskopf/Morrish design, is set along the Mungen River Highland and coastal marshes, with a view of Savannah across the water.
Also making the list at No. 66 is The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. The Westin La Paloma carefully blends the coveted Southwestern resort lifestyle with the fragile terrain of the Sonoran Desert. Lush turf-grass fairways share the space with stoic saguaro cacti and other indigenous flora and fauna. La Paloma is an early high-desert signature masterpiece by Jack Nicklaus. His three nine-hole layouts – Hill, Canyon and Ridge leave golfers awestruck by their beauty and challenge.
Finally, making its debut on the list at No. 67 is The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. Three spacious nines, Acacia, Ironwood and Mesquite make up the 27 holes of golf designed by Scott Miller. Emerald green fairways are etched into golden-colored desert grasses, sweeping over constantly changing elevations to flawless tif-eagle grass greens. More than three hundred bunkers guard the way, along with lakes, dry desert washes and strands of desert trees. Air-conditioned golf carts and a covered range make Kierland the perfect place to play in the warm Arizona summer!

In ranking these golf resorts, Golf Digest balloted nearly 800 members of its Course Ranking Panel who assigned scores of 1-10 (1 “awful” 10 “perfect”) to hundreds of U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Caribbean resorts. After the highest and lowest scores were discarded and an average rating was obtained, the score was multiplied by 10 to achieve a ranking on a 100-point scale. A destination had to be named on at least 20 ballots to be included among the top 75.
