JOHN MARSHALL BUTLER WINS 2020 SIZZLER AMATEUR
Tournament Record Leads Butler to Wire-to-Wire Victory in Scottsdale!
John Marshall Butler (Louisville, KY) won the 2020 Sizzler Amateur at Troon North Golf Club. Butler shot rounds of 64-67-69 for tournament record total of 200, 16 under par. The rising freshman at Auburn won by three shots over Jackson Lake (Clovis, CA and Oregon State) who closed with a six-under par 66. Local ASU standout Blake Wagoner (Cornelius, NC) finished third at -11 after a final round 67. Wells Padgett (Wichita, KS) and Hazen Newman (Las Vegas, NV) were another shot back in fourth, at 10-under par.
MARSHALL:
ON THE WIN: “It means a lot to win this tournament. I believe this tournament will upstart my amateur career. I am looking forward to Auburn in the fall and to coming back to defend my title next year.”
HIS KEYS FOR WINNING: “I think the key this week for me was keeping the ball in the fairway. If you miss fairways out here, you can shoot a high number. I had a very good low cut shot off the tee this week which allowed me to hit driver down the middle. My wedge game was solid and although I missed some putts, I gave myself a lot of opportunities. I grinded it out on the last 9 holes when it seemed my swing had left me.”
ON TROON NORTH: “Troon North is the coolest course I have ever played. You don’t get to see many mountains when you live in Kentucky.”
The Sizzler is in its fourth year and is one of the very first international amateur events being played since most tournaments were shut down in mid-March.
