Avinash Iyer Wins Grapevine Amateur at Silverado Resort
Iyer’s Final Round 64 Propels San Jose State Golfer to Victory
NAPA, California – Avinash Iyer (San Ramon, CA) shot a final round 64 (-8) on Silverado’s North Course Saturday to come-from-behind to win the 2023 Grapevine Amateur by four shots over William Walsh (San Mateo, CA) and Brady Siravo (Sacramento), both Pepperdine golfers. 36-hole leader Michael Weaver (Fresno) shot a final round 72 to finish five shots back in a tie for 4th.
IYER ON THE WIN: “The weather was not great through the whole 3 days and had to keep fighting. I didn’t play too great in the fall with the team but I did play well in an event last week. I’ve been working hard for the past few months so I was feeling pretty confident. I started out with a pretty simple birdie on the first hole…hit it pretty close. After I kept hitting it close but didn’t make too many putts. I made the turn at 4-under and then on the back kept giving myself chances and made a few putts at the end to shoot 4-under on the back to shoot 64.”

WEATHER: Players battled rain for the duration of the Grapevine Amateur, including in Wednesday’s practice round. Heavy rains began towards the conclusion of the second round and continued overnight into today. Silverado’s agronomy team did a spectacular job getting the golf course ready for today’s final round. Highs each day were in the high 50s with only light rain today at the beginning of the round. Most of today’s final round featured broken sunshine with pleasant temperatures and light winds.
