Q: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up and please explain if there was a story around that.
A: When I was younger, I aspired to be a police officer because the idea of serving the community and making a real difference in people’s lives appealed to me. Being a police officer provides the opportunity to help those in need, and brings a sense of purpose, responsibility, and fulfillment through problem-solving and building relationships. Interestingly, these are some of the same qualities I now value in my role as an HRBP.
Q: What is an interesting fact about your heritage that you would like to share with us?
A: An interesting aspect of Hispanic culture is the tradition of using two surnames, which dates to the 1500s. This practice was established to help trace family lineages more accurately. By using both paternal and maternal surnames, it’s easier to track a person’s ancestry and understand family connections.
Q: Was there a mentor that helped guide you along your current career path and was there a piece of advice that helped you along your way?
A: When I started my HR career my mentor was the VP of HR. One piece of advice she gave me was. “Listen actively before making decisions. Put yourself in their shoes. Remember, people are your greatest asset—invest in them.”
Q: How long have you worked for Troon and what has been your career progression at the facility; what do you love most about your job?
A: I’ve been with Troon for a year now, and it’s been the most rewarding experience of my career. What I enjoy most is collaborating with the talented individuals who make Troon the best in the industry, more specifically my HR Team.
Q: What do you do in your daily job or life to inspire other minorities to get them interested in the game of golf or into the golf business as a career?
A: I collaborate closely with my local Hispanic organization, HICA, as part of their Workforce Development Team.
Q: Where is your go-to place to eat out in Birmingham for authentic Hispanic cuisine?
A: When I’m in the mood for authentic Hispanic cuisine, I head to a taco truck called Tacos El Guero, just 5 minutes from my apartment. They serve a variety of delicious dishes, but my go-to favorites are Birria Tacos and the Torta Cubana.
