Dawn Crozier: General Manager: Volcano Golf Course, Volcano, Hawaii
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a veterinarian because I loved animals.
What got you into the hospitality industry and what was your first experience at a Troon facility?
I started in retail management and worked in that industry for a number of years in the Pacific Northwest. My first experience with Troon was helping to organize and represent the Hawaii Courses at the consumer trade shows in the Seattle, Portland and Vancouver, Canada areas. I then made some connections at a few golf courses where I did their buying and merchandising before the full-time operations position opened up in California.
How long have you worked for Troon and what has been your career progression; what do you love most about your job?
I have been with Troon since 2017 – I started in Palm Desert, CA running the golf operations at a semi-private course. I then moved to Oahu doing marketing, social media, buying and merchandising at Pearl Country Club and from there was promoted to General Manager at Volcano Golf Course.
Was there a female mentor that helped guide you along your current path and was there a piece of advice that helped you along your way?
My mother: she raised me to be independent, confident and goal oriented, gleaning through advice and experience and listening is key to success. Teamwork is essential for career growth and I couldn’t have gotten here without the teams that I have been part of and learned from. The people I work with and seeing them grow are an extension of my growth and future.
What do you do in your daily job or life to inspire other women or minorities to get them interested in the game of golf or into the golf business as a career?
Being open to allowing anyone to work at the course regardless of their golf knowledge, knowing that personality and work ethic will translate into getting the job done well and treating golfers to a great experience.
What is your dream foursome for golf (you and three others)?
My two brothers and my dad (with my niece as a 5th)
What is one interesting fact not many people know about you (that you don’t mind sharing)?
Through all the years of playing varied sports, the only nickname that ever stuck was Dawnika (like Annika).
What is one interesting fact about Volcano Golf Course that you want people to know?
The 18-hole layout at Volcano was designed by Jack Snyder, the same architect that designed well known courses like the Phoenician Golf Club, Ka’anapali Kai, and two Wailea Golf Courses (Blue and Gold).
