Fernando Vasquez is one of the newest members to Troon’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and joins a list of 12 others that make up the council. Vasquez has been the driving force at Alhambra in creating a welcoming environment for both guests and associates. As an example, the facility has been known for their tremendous support and outreach with the Latino community, home to the Latina Golf Association, founded by Azucena Maldonado.
Maldonado’s California-based organization was founded in 2008. While nationwide membership numbers have impressively grown to 5,000 people and their social media reach is double that, Maldonado still remembers her humble beginnings.
“It was a real challenge to partner with golf courses who were not necessarily open to doing things a little differently. Clubs were resistant to change, particularly with a relatively unknown demographic in some golf circles.”
Maldonado continued, “However, Alhambra Golf Course graciously opened their doors to us. It was an instant success: 60 women attended the Latina Golfers Association’s first clinic hosted by Fernando Vasquez. He was our number one instructor and supporter. Vasquez has since been promoted to general manager at Alhambra. We are forever grateful for our relationships with him, Alhambra and now Troon.”
Vasquez has been in the golf industry for 28 years and knows the importance of reaching out to those in the community, as well mentoring his associates so that they may grow in their careers. Vasquez’ recent promotion of Jasmine Lam is a good example of that, as she recently climbed the ranks to Assistant General Manager at Alhambra, the first female to do so at the facility!
When he’s at work, Fernando loves to engage with his guests and associates and take Jack, the “Goose Patrol” dog, on course runs. When he is not working, he loves to go fly fishing and watch the Cubs play. His favorite vacation spot is fishing in Montana.
We thank Fernando for leading by example in helping to bring up the next generation of not only golfers but also our associates within the Troon family.
