2016 Troon Challenge National Finals Comes To Exciting Conclusion
Scottsdale, Ariz. (September 19, 2016) – After 34 regional qualifiers covering 13 states, the 2016 Troon Challenge National Finals presented by Callaway Golf® recently came to an exciting conclusion at the Boulders Golf Club and Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Sixty two-person teams represented their home clubs in the Finals, and battled in both gross and net divisions with the eventual champions determined by just one shot in each division.
The Troon Challenge is a series of amateur golf tournaments held at world-class Troon® facilities across the United States. Beginning in April and running through August, more than 520 two-person teams competed in regional qualifying events for the right to compete in the Troon Challenge National Finals in Scottsdale, September 9-11.
In the Gross Division, Alexander Abate and Carter Newman, representing La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas, took home the Gross Division title shooting an opening round 63 at the Boulders North Course and a final round 61 on Troon North’s Monument Course. The talented Texas duo finished one shot ahead of Ty Barrenchea and Tony Potter of Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., and seven shots ahead of the third place team of Joseph Fox and Steve Blackford representing Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale. Fox and Blackford were the defending Gross Division champions from the 2015 Troon Challenge National Finals.
In the Net Division, Paul Ventimiglio and Joe Boragno representing Yocha Dehe Golf Club in Brooks, Calif. shot rounds of 62 and 63 to finish one shot ahead of Dwayne Townsend and Ronnie Schmitz, who were representing Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. After an opening round 61 on the Boulders’ North Course, Townsend and Schmitz closed with a final round 65 on Troon North’s Monument Course. James Leveroni and Sarah Relyea of The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge in Monroe, New York finished in third place with rounds of 64 and 65.
